--- Shareware Concept:
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying it.
If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to
register. Individual programs differ on details -- some request registration
while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the
software to a myriad of benefits.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated
below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial
authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there
are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute
the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example,
some authors require written permission before a commercial disk vendor may
copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find
software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commercial or
Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you
can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also.
Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.
--- Disclaimer / Agreement:
Users of Network Appointment Scheduler must accept this disclaimer of
warranty:
Network Appointment Scheduler is supplied as is. The author disclaims all
warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the
warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The
author assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequential, which
may result from the use of Network Appointment Scheduler.
Network Appointment Scheduler is a "shareware program" and is provided at no
charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends,
but please do not give it away altered or as part of another system.
The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer
users with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide
incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products. If you
find this program useful and find that you are using Network Appointment
Scheduler and continue to use it after a 30 day trial period, you must
make a registration payment to DataTek Computer Services.
Commercial users of Network Appointment Scheduler must register and pay for
their copies of Network Appointment Scheduler within 30 days of first use
or their license is withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may be made by
contacting DataTek Computer Services.
Anyone distributing Network Appointment Scheduler for any kind of remuneration
must first contact DataTek Computer Services at the address below for
authorization. This authorization will be automatically granted to
distributors recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for
shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin offering Network
Appointment Scheduler immediately. However DataTek must still be advised so
that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest version of Network
Appointment Scheduler.
You are encouraged to pass a copy of Network Appointment Scheduler along to
your friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if
they find that they can use it. All registered users will receive a copy of
the latest version of Network Appointment Scheduler along with other benefits
described below.
--- ASP Ombudsman Statement:
"This program is produced by DataTek Computer Services, a member of the
Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that
the shareware principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a
shareware-related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member
directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a
dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide technical support
for members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover
Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a CompuServe message via CompuServe Mail to
ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536."
--- Installation:
To install Network Appointment Scheduler (NAS), simply create a sub-directory
and decompress the distribution file to this sub-directory. For the purpose
of example we will assume that the user is copying the Network Appointment
Scheduler.ZIP (ASXXXXX.ZIP) file from drive A to drive C. You will have to
substitute whatever drive you intend to use.
Change to drive C type C: [press Enter]
make sure you're in
the root directory type CD\ [press Enter]
create the sub-directory type MD NAS [press Enter]
change to this new
sub-directory type CD NAS [press Enter]
copy the compressed file
to the sub-directory type COPY A:\NASXXXXX.ZIP C: [press Enter]
de-compress the file type PKUNZIP NAS*.ZIP [press Enter]
delete the .ZIP file type DEL NAS*.ZIP [press Enter]
That's it!
--- Overview:
Network Appointment Scheduler is a complete electronic calendar and
appointment system to keep your schedule organized and clear. AS uses
intuitive screen design to make data entry and editing fast, easy,
efficient and productive.
--- Network Operation
NAS is designed to work with NetBios based Networks such as LANtastic. NAS
has been tested on LANtastic 4.x and 5.x and WEB NOS. The program should work
correctly on any similarly based network but if you discover a problem with
a specific network, please let us know so we can look into correcting the
error. NAS will prevent two users from editing the same file by changing the
name of the file in use. We took this direction because NAS does not keep a
file open while data is being reviewed or changed. It reads the data into
memory and then closes the file. Rather than trying to track which files are
open and which are closed, NAS simply changes the name when a file is being
used and changes the name back again when the user save the new data and
returns to the date selection function. Meanwhile another user wishing to
edit the same file will be presented with a message that the file they want
is in use and they should consult the other users or try again later.
--- Starting The Program:
Start the program by typing 'AS' at the DOS prompt.
The following screen will appear. In the registered version your name and
serial number will appear and the question "Would you like to print the
order form?" will not appear.
Press 'Y' to print the order form and 'N' to skip the order form and enter
the program.

To force color mode when starting Network Appointment Scheduler type 'NAS /C'
at the DOS prompt. To force monochrome mode type 'NAS /B'. You can see these
options by typing 'NAS /?' at the DOS prompt.
As soon as you start NAS, the first thing it does is check for the presence
of the DOS SHARE command. If SHARE (a DOS networking driver) is not active in
memory, NAS will not run. It will display a message telling you to run SHARE
then restart NAS.

╚══════════════════════════ Alt-D Delete Record(s) ═════════════════════════╝
When you launch AS, your cursor is in the calendar in the upper left corner
of the screen. You may change dates by using the four arrow keys and the plus
and minus keys or clicking on the boxes associated with these options.
The keys available are:
Alt-D Switch to the Delete Record(s) screen
Alt-L Launch the Pop-Up calculator
Left Arrow Move one day back in time
Right Arrow Move one day forward in time
Up Arrow Move seven days back in time
Down Arrow Move seven days forward in time
Plus Key (+) Move one month forward in time
Minus Key (-) Move one month back in time
**NOTE: AS processes the + and - minus keys by changing it's 'DATE' register
by either +30 or -30 days. Therefore, you will move 30 days forward or
backward and depending on you current date may not move into a different
month. Ex. if you are on Oct. 1 and press the + key the date will change to
Oct. 31 (30 days ahead) not Nov. 1.
F10 - Quits AS and returns you to DOS.
As you change dates, Today's Date and the Appt. Date are displayed in the
command window. Here you will also find 'Today-At-A-Glance'. In the schedule
window, the first 3 hours of that days schedule will appear if any exists.
To select a date to edit, press Enter.
--- Calculator:
To activate the pop-up calculator, use the [Alt-L] key combination. You can
activate the calculator from almost anywhere in the program.
--- Today-At-A-Glance:
This mini-schedule shows you the available time for the day currently
highlighted in the calendar. The |'s mark every half hour and the TAAG runs
the same period as the schedule itself, 7:00 am to 11:00 pm in 15 minute
increments.
Three characters are used to display the day's schedule graphically, they are:
▌ First 15 minutes of a 1/2 hour period
▐ Second 15 minutes of a 1/2 hour period
█ The entire half hour is occupied

╚══ Alt-E Clear All Entries ══ Alt-O Copy ══ Alt-T Cut ══ Alt-P Paste ═══╝
When you select a date, the command window will change to display your
available options. They are:
Alt-L Launch the Pop-Up calculator
F2 Print Print the schedule for the appointment date currently
displayed
F4 New Date Exit the edit mode and return to the date selection mode
F10 Quit Exit the program
Along the bottom of the screen other commands will appear. They are:
Alt-E Clear All Entries for this date.
Alt-O Copy the currently highlighted item to be pasted elsewhere.
Alt-T Cuts/Removes the currently highlighted item to be pasted
elsewhere.
Alt-P Pastes/Places a previously copied or cut item into the
currently highlighted field replacing any text that is there.
When you are in the edit mode, the 7:00 am line in the schedule window will
change color. Whatever line is highlighted is the line you are currently
editing. You can change lines by using the following keys:
■ Up Arrow
■ Down Arrow
■ Page Up
■ Page Down
The symbol ■ appears on the screen above. It represents the placement of
graphic arrows that cannot be displayed in this type of printed document
because many printers interpret these characters as printer command codes.
The arrows do appear in the laser printed manual.
When you are done editing, press F4 to select a new date, or F10 to Quit.
Either key will save your data immediately.
We usually use a | to express a continued appointment, you can use any
character on the keyboard instead of re-typing and entire description.
Ex. To express a 1 hour breakfast meeting you might choose to enter the
data like this.
7:00 Breakfast with George & Mary
7:15 |
7:30 |
8:45 |
This would block the 7:00 to 7:45 am slots on the 'Day-At-A-Glance'.
Any character in a time field will cause the Day-At-A-Glance to show that
time slot as filled.
--- Delete Record(s):
The Delete Record(s) screen presents you with a list of dates for which
data files are present. You may delete the data files associated with each
by either pressing enter on the highlighted date or double-clicking on the
highlighted date.
To exit this section, press the F10 key.
--- Print Schedule:
When you press F2 to Print a Daily Schedule you will be presented with an
option box.
╔═════════════════════╗
║ [F]ull Schedule ║
║ [A]ppointments Only ║
╚═════════════════════╝
If you pressed F2 in error you can cancel the print function by pressing the
ESC key. If you want to print a schedule you may choose from a Full Schedule
or Appointments Only.
Full Schedule prints all the time slots for the day regardless of
whether or not any of the time slots are used.
Appointments Only prints only the time slots that are used.

--- Support:
DataTek Computer Services in a small company that I run part-time from my
home. Like many people I have a regular job that keeps my family fed. I am
usually available every night between 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm Eastern time and
from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm on weekends. Occasionally I go out for an evening or
go on vacation, but my answering machine is ALWAYS on and I will return your
call assuming you leave a number and the best time to call you.
I will be just as happy to help Shareware users as I am to help registered
users, however, assuming there is a list of users for me to call, registered
users will be moved to the top of it. Fair is fair. As far as I'm concerned
support is perpetual.
You can contact DataTek in any of the following ways:
Phone: (215) 374-2097 during the hours listed above or leave a message at
other times.
BBS: (215) 374-3735 24 hours
Mail: Kirk A. Wentzel
DataTek Computer Services
547 Wunder Street
Reading, PA 19602-2005
Benefits of Registration:
By registering Network Appointment Scheduler you will receive the following:
1. The latest version of Network Appointment Scheduler.
2. An account on our 24-hour support BBS if you want one.
3. A certificate worth a 20% discount on one upgrade or 1 other DCS Software
program.
4. Our quarterly newsletter to advise registered users of tips, tricks, new
programs and new versions.
5. The header screen on AS will stop asking if you want to print the
'Order Form' and the ending screen will just go bye-bye
6. The watermark "Printed by Unregistered Network Appointment Scheduler"
will be removed from the reports.
7. The undying gratitude of our programmers who strive to bring you quality,
useful software at a reasonable cost.
--- Customization:
If you like, we would be happy to give you a quote on customizing Network
Appointment Scheduler. While AS is a good all-around tool, there may be
some companies or individuals who would prefer to have fields added, deleted,
changed, etc.
Import/Export Filters:
If you have an existing database, and want to import it into AS or want to
export AS to a specific database or other format, call us. While we intend
to work on some import/export filters ourselves, yours may not be among them.
We'll be happy to quote a price on a specific filter or customize a filter
for your needs.
--- History:
Version 1.10 11-25-93
This version corrects a few bugs that appeared since the initial release.
First, we changed the error handler to allow you to continue working in cases
where non-fatal errors occured. Previously if the printer was offline and you
tried to print, you would receive an error message identifying the error and
asking you to [A]bort or [R]etry. If you choose abort, AS would end and
return you to DOS. It now will send you back to the date selection window and
cancel the print request. We also corrected a bug that allowed more than one
user to edit the same file at the same time. If this were allowed to continue
it is conceivable that one user could overwrite another users changes. We also
fixed a bug that caused the cursor NOT to return to the first position on an
appointment line on any screen except screen one. The cursor now returns to
the first position on all appointment screens. A few technical changes were
made to the manual as well. NAS also checks to see if SHARE is active before
launching. If SHARE is not active a message will be displayed telling you
to run SHARE before starting NAS. SHARE is a DOS networking driver. Please
refer to your DOS manual for more information on SHARE.
